Position Overview: Art Teacher
The Art Teacher provides students with a comprehensive introduction to art across historical periods while fostering creativity, artistic expression, and skill development. Instruction is aligned with the Core Knowledge Sequence and is designed to reinforce and connect with content taught across other subject areas.
This role requires an educator who is organized, adaptable, and passionate about making art accessible and engaging for all students.
Key Responsibilities
Plan, deliver, and evaluate engaging art instruction aligned with the Core Knowledge curriculum
Teach foundational artistic concepts, techniques, and historical context across grade levels
Foster creativity and support students in expressing their understanding through artistic work
Collaborate with colleagues to ensure interdisciplinary connections across the curriculum
Communicate effectively with students, families, and colleagues regarding student progress and classroom expectations
Maintain an organized system for managing and transporting materials across classrooms, as MVRCS does not have a dedicated art room
Ensure classrooms are left orderly and transitions between classes are smooth and well-managed
Provide supervision and guidance during transitions to support a structured school environment
Serve as a confident and positive classroom leader, maintaining clear expectations and strong classroom management
Additional Responsibilities
Provide extra help and academic support to students as needed
Assist with exam proctoring and other school-wide responsibilities
Support school operations, including lunch, recess, or class coverage when required
Participate in and support co-curricular and school-wide activities
Expectations for Specialty Teachers
Arrive to class on time and ensure timely, organized transitions between classes
Maintain responsibility for classroom management during instruction, in collaboration with Instructional Assistants
Communicate any disciplinary actions or concerns with homeroom teachers
Collaborate respectfully and effectively with colleagues, sharing classroom spaces and resources
Keep all materials organized and use shared classroom resources responsibly
Maintain behavior tracking systems (e.g., TAT/behavior charts) and promote positive reinforcement, following a 4:1 ratio of positive to corrective feedback
Recognize that specialty classes may involve collaborative, discussion-based, or activity-driven learning (e.g., group work, art discussions), and communicate expectations clearly to students and staff
Qualifications & Skills
Strong communication skills, with the ability to present concepts clearly and effectively
Ability to engage and inspire students while maintaining a structured, well-managed classroom
Organizational skills to manage materials and instruction across multiple locations
Collaborative mindset and ability to work effectively within a team environment
Commitment to maintaining high expectations for both academic and behavioral standards
