Job Description

The English Teacher is responsible for implementing Mystic Valley Regional Charter School’s (MVRCS) English program in Grades 7-12. The English Teacher delivers instruction according to the Core Knowledge and Great Books programs, both in curriculum and methodology. MVRCS’s high school program features the rigorous and world-renowned International Baccalaureate (IB) program, and high school English assignments may include IB coursework.

Responsibilities

  1. Execute a program of study according to the documented curricula, Great Books literature program, and, if applicable, IB. Teachers are generally assigned five subject-area classes, each of which meets daily.
  2. Deliver instruction using Core Knowledge and IB methodology.
  3. Deliver lessons and units of instruction that are based on clear learning objectives.
  4. Assess student progress on a regular basis, providing progress reports and report cards as required.
  5. Execute standardized testing, as directed by the English Department Chair and the Leadership Team.
  6. Collaborate and communicate on a weekly basis with colleagues in the English department, including the Department Chair. Topics for collaboration include, but are not limited to, curriculum, instruction, assessment, data analysis, and methodology.
  7. Implement the school’s assertive discipline model for classroom management with fidelity.
  8. Attend all staff meetings and participate in staff development programs.

Other Responsibilities

Other responsibilities as assigned by the English Department Chair, Assistant Director, Assistant Superintendent, and/or Superintendent/Director.

Requirements and Licensure

  1. At least a bachelor’s degree in English.
  2. Ability to communicate clearly and concisely both in oral and written form.
  3. Ability to write reports and correspondences.
  4. Ability to evaluate information and determine/recommend an appropriate course of action.
  5. Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions.
  6. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, parents, staff and the community.
  7. Ability to perform duties with awareness of all school requirements, state and federal laws, and MVRCS policies.
  8. Experience evaluating student skills and writing reports interpreting/summarize findings.
  9. Strong collaborative, teaching, coaching, and leadership skills to support student programming and work in a team setting.
  10. Strong problem-solving skills to support student success.
    1. Strong organizational skills to balance the demands of a multi-tasking position.
  11. A proactive and solution-focused approach to meeting student needs.
  12. Knowledge of specialized content area as well as any related laws and procedures.
  13. Ability to plan and implement lessons based on district and school objectives and the needs and abilities of students to whom assigned.

This position reports to the English Department Chair. The position will be evaluated yearly and will be an annual appointment.
