Description:
Under the direct supervision of the Assistant Directors (K-8), and in accordance with the Board of Trustees’ policies, the Reading Specialist will oversee Mystic Valley Regional Charter School’s Reading Intervention program. The Reading Specialist will work directly with students, primarily students in Grades 1-6 but possibly up through 8, to improve known deficiencies in reading or language for at risk or below grade level students. The Reading Specialist is responsible for analyzing both internal and external data to a) identify students at risk and in need of remediation and b) to develop strategies and then supporting curriculum to assist the students reach grade level proficiency. This is an eleven-month position.
Roles and Responsibilities:
- Serve as point person for contacting the parents at risk students the areas of reading and/or language acquisition to enroll them in the program
- Collaborate with other Reading Specialists and classroom teachers to ensure curriculum is consistent.
- Direct Instruction programs should be used whenever possible for intervention. If a student is at a grade level where DI programs are not applicable, the Reading Specialist will maintain fidelity to school approved programs and avoid introducing/developing any curriculum that is not aligned to Direct Instruction or Core Knowledge. No new curriculum will be introduced without going through the proper vetting procedures.
- Teach at risk students throughout the day as set forth in a teacher’s schedule to be provided by August 15th each year.
- Teach additional at risk students throughout the year as they become identified or enroll in the school.
- Prepare quarterly progress reports to be sent home with the report cards to the parents of the at risk students being serviced.
- Be present at parent teacher conferences.
- Perform appropriate supplemental duties to support school operations, as assigned by either of the lower school assistant directors.
Qualifications:
- 3 or more years experience in a similar role is preferred.
- An ability to support and adhere to school policy and process.
